Tethering Grace & Togetherness

What I can learn from my old bedroom: on celebration, change, and staying little.

January 1, 2016 by HappyGoStuckey 1 Comment

While the popping firework cannons sound the end of 2015, I’m bringing in the New Year in my pajamas with fingers tap-tap-tapping on the keyboard. I’m ending one year and beginning a new one in my childhood bedroom, which consequently is no longer pink and white with 92 stuffed animals– now I sit in what looks like the inside of a ripe avocado. The curtained canopy bed is gone and my mom finally removed all my high school choir tour photos from the back of my bedroom door. One stubborn piece of photo backing is all that stands of those years. It’s probably for the best. That much stonewashed denim and Aussie sprunch spray should remain in the past.

Nearly everyone in this house of safety is fast asleep, including my own little look-alikes, they went to sleep hours ago after a driveway parade that even my silver-bearded dad marched in. When the girls discovered a NYE Party box full of plastic leis, sparkly hats, and the LOUDEST party-blowers a sane person has ever survived– they immediately planned a marching band-parade- extravaganza for right before bedtime. In pajamas and rain boots they led us around the back of the house and up and down the gravel drive. My dad and their dad blew piercing noisemakers and followed behind this gaggle of their girls. We marched and blew, marched and sang, marched and laughed out loud at the awful high-pitched band of chaos we made. I’ve never actually heard six geese being rhythmically strangled with all deliberateness– but now I know. It’s LOUD. That was a good fun way to end 2015.

Can I be honest? This year was a challenge. Like putting control-top pantyhose on an octopus- challenging. As a family, we had a fabulous year. As a writer? I worked many months on a book proposal only to get to the very end of the year and recognize that perhaps I *could* go in a different direction. Harrowing. I floundered a bit here and there. I allowed the pressure of great opportunities to paralyze me into doing very little. I put my work out there and got rejected. Three times. In one month. That took an already small me and made me a bit smaller.

writing-4

But let’s be honest. Small is good. Small is really good sometimes. Here I sit, in “my” bedroom in “my” old house and I feel small enough to be someone’s little girl still. I feel small enough for extra blankets and flannel sheets and snuggling down deep. I feel small enough to remember when these dreams were just beginning. When there was all fresh hope and lots of good stuff ahead on the cusp of tomorrow. I am small enough to remember that all that hope was spot on. That all that good, all those good plans, were good because they were God’s good plans and He is good.

And I trusted Him. And I trust Him still. And though we ended one year with lovely, boisterous, chaos and happy noise-making–

I’m beginning the next one with a prayer.

May we pause long enough to hear the needs inside us.
May we slow often enough to meet the needs around us.
May we laugh loud enough to share the hope within us.
May we feel small enough to recognize the big God that holds us.
And shapes us.
And saves us.
And covers us.
And comes for us.

May we sing more, listen more,
Pray more and say more– of what we should– and less of what we should not.
May we curl up with more books and read,
Curl up with our human-ness and rest,
And curl up with our children and just be– there.

May we see the things that need to change in us and then allow the only true Change-Maker– to take over and truly change us.
And then may we not be frustrated when we find we need more change still.

May we find and use and worship with the gifts that are ours–not hers or his— but ours… only ours given by Him who hands them out to His expectant children.

May we stretch and try and try a bit more and stumble and return to that drawing board or blank canvas or blank document or blank sheet begging for music. May we never stop using the gifts and living out our callings, all of them at once- and not waiting for someday.

May we never once doubt that we hold the light and we are in that city– that city truly on a hill and we must keep shining His light and His love and His creativity. Every single day.

Amen.

Thank you for joining me this year. It was truly a privilege to share my little table with you here. I plan to share my 2015 Recap/ What I learned in the next couple of days. Hope to see you there. Happy New Year!!!

Why Knowing “God With Us” is Enough In Our Parenting.

December 21, 2015 by HappyGoStuckey 2 Comments

Snuggled together on the couch, her little limbs tangle with mine like January branches. She touches her nose to my cheek and asks for a story with a smirk. I check the time and nod— stifle a sigh and find a smile. The bedtime runway is in sight. This plane will soon land and I am air traffic control.

She hands me the pumpkin book, the sweet one with the farmer who scrapes the messy, seedy slop out and then fills it with light. This book, an October rite of passage, is frayed from how often we read it but she burrows in and we begin.
We move through together, taking turns reading until the last page is turned and I move to get up.

“I think I might want to do that soon.” She says in a soft voice.
“Carve a Jack-o-lantern? That sounds fun.” I reply as I gently untangle my limbs from hers.
“No. I mean let God do that with me. Let Him fill me with light and take out all the yucky stuff.”
I freeze right where I sit and her eyes are wide but not nearly as wide as mine, because this is one of those moments that I want to get right. She stares at me with peaceful sleepy eyes and we chat a little bit about what it means to choose Jesus and to let Him make us brand new and why we are so full of sin and in need of cleaning in the first place and… does she have any more questions?

She stops and smiles and says, “Umm, Mommy? You have a poppyseed in your teeth.”

The moment is over as quickly as it came and I go to bed laughing and breathing heavy questions. Was this the moment? Should I have pressed her a little more? Rushing right behind the questions comes the reminder that God brought this up in the first place. There is time to wait… on Him and on her.

Sighs and prayers are streaming tonight—because I never saw that coming and isn’t that just the way it is with parenting little people?
Days full to the edge with the trail mix of everydayness. Then like the first Roman Candle on the 4th of July, boom. Heart talk.

enough

It happens when we are watching the clock. When we’re barely awake and surviving on coffee and Pb&J crust. Right when God tugs at their tender hearts and jolts us back. Back to the business of being always ready. Ready to point them back to Him.
Being that question-fielder is daunting, isn’t it? Harrowing and humbling and full of wonder. And just— hard. But here we are, in these shoes— for a sacred reason. The job of raising these little ones fills our insides with awe and fear, just as those first tiny kicks did.

More than ever before I recognize that He is in it all. Both in the talk of hearts and heaven and in the hilarious chats about why we have belly buttons & which Disney Princess reigns supreme.

On these days when I go to bed laughing and grateful that He was watching her heart while I was watching the clock, I know.
I know that He is in it all. Even then, I still feel painfully inadequate when green eyes are staring back at me with the fruit of my midnight prayers.
I need Him. With every new stage and unforeseen question.
I need His wisdom.
I need His mercy when I mess things up big time.
This mama needs more than a “Good Job!”
I need so much more than a pat on the back. I need Immanuel, God WITH us.

Immanuel, God With Us is so much more than a heading on a Christmas card.

It is what gets me out of bed some days.
It is my victory chant.
It is my tired-mama mantra.
The knowledge that He is always with us, and watching over them? It is enough. He is ALWAYS ENOUGH.

Need a musical reminder of this very thing? This song, “God With Us” by All Sons & Daughters is beautiful and a favorite for sure.

How I met Noonday (and a SALE!!)

December 15, 2015 by HappyGoStuckey

Several years ago at the Allume Conference, Jennie Allen brought a message that was passionate, winsome and engaging. But… I missed the first ten minutes because I was so distracted by her necklace. True story. Jennie took the stage wearing tastefully ripped jeans and the blue Tushabe Necklace from Noonday Collection. Once I pulled myself back into what she was saying I ended up taking three pages of notes which I still revisit often. I left that meal determined to read her book, Restless, as soon as I returned home– and I also walked away on a mission to learn more about that company that made such beautifully unique jewelry.

Noonday Collection is a socially conscious and responsible business that uses their influence in the world FOR the World. (Read more about their purpose HERE.) They make some of the most uniquely inspired, gorgeous pieces of jewelry I have ever seen or worn. My own little collection of Noonday is small and special. I keep it in boxes and admittedly, I plan simple outfits just so I can add a bit of Noonday sparkle.

This year at the very same Allume Conference, I met Wendy. Wendy is a Noonday Ambassador who absolutely loves Jesus and Noonday and shines brightly when she talks about both. She let me in on three little secrets and I’d love to pass on the love to you–

  1. Noonday is having a SALE. EEK!
  2. There is a excellent article on Christian Entrepreneurs here, where you will find a code for an extra 10% off your Noonday purchase.
  3. Oh, YEAH. Today, December 15th, is the LAST day for Christmas delivery.

If you’re on the fence about what to gift for someone you love– or which link to ahem, copy and paste, to the one who loves you… here are a few of my favorites!

Tushabe Necklace in Blue
Tushabe Necklace in Blue.

Yep. This pretty little thing eventually went on a major sale and my sweet guy surprised me with it. The blue is no more, but there IS a gorgeous lilac version here and it’s on a great sale too: Tushabe Lilac  All of these pieces are definitely ones you would treasure and keep forever. This one dresses up a t-shirt in such a fun way.

I don’t own these Cow Horn Hoops— but I think they are adorable. One of my friends has a pair of the larger hoops and said how comfy and not at all heavy they are.

Feathered Fringe Earrings. These. These are my favorite. I bought them to support my friend Kasey’s adoption of her little guy and every time I wear them, I’m so happy I had a small part in his coming home. (did you know Noonday offers fundraising trunk shows? Adoption is close to their hearts.)

For scale. These are what I consider “big” earrings– but being as they are made of buttery soft leather, they are not the least bit heavy.

A few other items I noticed on the Noonday Website are these:

The Lovely Loops Necklace in coral and pink– how fun for spring?

Each of these Safari Stack bracelets is such a great deal at $14.00 a piece (even before that extra 10% off) and you can wear one or several– so very cute.

If you still have shopping to do, would you consider hopping over here and taking a look around? Every purchase counts and every piece of handmade jewelry has given someone a better livelihood and a fair wage. Some pieces are more expensive than others based on what materials are used, but personally? I would rather have two pieces of quality jewelry that invested in someone else than a drawer full of anything else.

Balance & Butternut Squash Soup (Slow-Cooker!)

December 8, 2015 by HappyGoStuckey Leave a Comment

I know I’m not alone when I say that I love Christmas. The change in our pace. The expectation. The traditions we continue and begin. The extra little sparkle our house holds with white lights and a tall tree. I love that we literally alter so much of our regular routines while we wait for Christmas. But sometimes. Sometimes those extra cookies we bake, places we celebrate, and parties we attend leave us feeling just a bit like Buddy the Elf.

We all love a little Christmas baking– but do you know what I love even more? BALANCE. Eating my veggies all the way through December so I don’t feel quite so guilty when indulging in a little home-baked goodness. But let’s be honest, I still really enjoy the comfort food.

Balanceandsoup

Enter this easy-peasy Butternut Squash Soup. Throw these ingredients in your slow cooker and a few hours later, you have a warm, comforting dinner that goes really nicely with salad, grilled cheese or just a spoon! Eat it in front of Christmas tree and pretend it’s a cookie. Ha!

Butternut Squash Soup (Slow-Cooker)
Author: Cynthia Stuckey

Ingredients
  • 2 lbs. peeled, seeded, Butternut Squash (Costco sells this already done for you, yay, Costco!)
  • 1 medium carrot or 10-12 baby carrots
  • 3 small sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup of chopped onion
  • 1 tbs. olive oil
  • 32oz. Chicken Broth (or Vegetable Broth)
  • 1 tsp. dried sage
  • 1½ tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 tiny pinch of Red pepper flakes (no more than ⅛th of a tsp. unless you really like it spicy.)
  • ½ tsp. fresh ground black pepper
  • 1-2 Tbs. Maple Syrup
Method
  1. Place squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots in slow cooker.
  2. In a skillet, sautee onion and garlic in olive oil until translucent and just beginning to brown-- then add to the slow cooker with the squash.
  3. Add all remaining ingredients except the maple syrup, (broth through pepper and stir lightly.) Cook on Low for 5-6 hours, (more if needed.)
  4. Blend soup until smooth with a stick blender. (If you don't have one, use a regular blender but be careful! Fill only half full at a time and allow the steam to escape.)
  5. Add maple syrup and then taste for additional salt or pepper.
  6. At this point, you *can* add a little cream, but either way, it is delicious. Enjoy it topped it with toasted pumpkin seeds, delicious!

This soup would also be give to a friend or new mom. And it can easily be made vegetarian.

Note: If you have had the Panera Autumn Squash Soup, this is a smooth, creamy soup like that one but is not so sweet. The maple syrup gives it a slight sweetness and the Red pepper gives it a little spicy kick.

If you are a regular to this little space, then you already know that I am passionate about the table. The table and I go way back. Way back to when my shoes were purple with velcro fasteners and my hair was held back with those fuzzy yarn ribbons. Remember those? Cindy Brady and I had several things in common. The brothers, the name, those yarn hair ribbons and the exaggerated poochy lip. Even then, I loved being in my chair, on a copy of the Yellow Pages, in my spot at my parents table.

My head is pretty jam-packed with memories of that table and of others. About 18 months ago, I felt the push to begin writing them down. I’ve written and written but I have kept it mostly to myself because, well– it’s scary and it’s special and I hope that at some point they will be a book. I’m dreaming up a food and table memoir, of what it really means to feast on life and what really fills us. At this point, the road to that end is winding and unknown and I don’t want to keep it all squirreled away for someday. Therefore I’m sharing a bit with you today.

So, I made a little something that I hope reminds us all of what I know from living my little life at the table.
FeastPrint

My hope is that you will print this out and frame it– put it up in your house throughout the Christmas season. I hope you will look at it when you burn the cookies and forget the crucial ingredient to that dinner party you’re having. When the tea isn’t sweet enough and you feel like your table isn’t fancy enough– remember what we know to be true.

[Tweet “”Being Filled at the Table is not about the food. It is about the Feast of Life lived together.” -Cynthia Stuckey”]

May we all remember this Christmas and every day after that living life together is a true grace gift, and it is one we desperately crave– not in spite of, but alongside our humanity.

Apple Cider Cake with Maple Glaze

November 20, 2015 by HappyGoStuckey 1 Comment

My mom makes perfect pumpkin pie. Custardy, dense, and perfectly cinnamon-y filling tucked in a homemade flaky piecrust that would make you slap your… Never mind. It’s A-MAZ-Ing. Even when I make it just like hers, it still isn’t quite like hers. Moms just have that talent.

Every now and then, I hear someone say they dislike pumpkin pie and I’m so sad for them. I get it though– for some it’s the texture. But, pumpkin is technically a vegetable therefore pumpkin pie shouldn’t really even count as dessert. It should really be on the table with the brussels sprouts and the green beans.

Even if you are not a fan of eating your vegetables in a pie crust with freshly whipped cream, your Thanksgiving still needs a seasonal dessert. IF you do not love pumpkin, you might just love this Apple Cider Cake. This is my favorite “September” cake– when the weather begins to cool a little but we really aren’t ready for pumpkin goodness, this— this cake is the one to bake. The layers of thinly sliced apples mixed with cinnamon and sugar baked into the middle of the batter make this cake impressive enough for the Holidays and the glaze sends this cake over the top.

Apple Cider Cake with Maple Cinnamon Glaze
Author: Cynthia Stuckey
Serves: 12-15

Ingredients
  • Apple Slices: 5 medium baking apples, cored and sliced thin.
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 5 tbs. of sugar
  • Cake Batter: 2½ cups of All-Purpose Flour
  • ½ cup of White Whole Wheat Flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 heaping tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tiny pinch of both nutmeg and allspice (these are important for the "cider" flavor.)
  • 1½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1½ tsp. baking powder
  • 2¼ cups of sugar
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened (1/2 cup)
  • ½ cup plain Apple Sauce
  • 4 eggs
  • ⅓ cup. Apple Cider (sub. fresh orange juice)
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Apple Cider Glaze: 2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1½ tbs. pure maple syrup
  • ½ tsp. Cinnamon
  • Small Dash of Allspice
  • Apple Cider, 2-3 Tbs.
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 350' Grease and flour a tube or bundt cake pan.
  2. In a bowl, mix together Apple Slices ingredients. Set aside.
  3. In another medium bowl, whisk together flours, ½ tsp. salt, spices, and baking powder and soda.
  4. Mix together eggs, butter, applesauce, cider and sugar and beat with an electric mixer.
  5. Add in vanilla. Incorporate flour mixture a little at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Add one third of the batter to the prepared pan, then layer in half of the seasoned apples.
  7. Layer the remaining ⅔ of the batter with the other half of the apples in between. (Two layers of sliced apples with batter in between total.)
  8. Bake at 350' for 45-75 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. You need to keep an eye on it after 45 minutes but it may take up to an hour. (It really depends on the apples you use and how thinly they are sliced.)
  9. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes and then invert the cake pan and allow cake to cool completely.
  10. Mix Maple Cinnamon Glaze ingredients together, adding the cider (or milk) only 1 tbs. at a time until you have the desired consistency. Add more cinnamon or maple to taste.
  11. Drizzle glaze all over the cooled cake. Serve with whipped cream.

Fresh Ideas for Packing Your Operation Christmas Child Box

November 9, 2015 by HappyGoStuckey 2 Comments

National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child is not too far in the future.

OCCBoxIdeas

Of all the Autumn traditions we have as a family, having a small part in the amazing ministry of Operation Christmas Child is always a priority. Making boxes each year is important to our family and something we all enjoy together. It is one thing we can tangibly do to be the hands and feet of Jesus to children far away. It may often seem like a simple thing to us, but it is not to these children. They. are. grateful.

One day, I would love to be a part of the box distribution. But thanks to Samaritan’s Purse and the OCC team, we get to see beautiful photographs and video footage of our boxes in little hands and watch faces light up. It is no small thing.

In case you are packing a box for the first time, I put together a short list with a few ideas for packing your box! Many of these things come in sets of 3-5 so if you go in together with someone else to make boxes, you can get a great deal. Or save the extras for next year and you’ll have a head start. If you have Amazon Prime (I don’t know how we ever survived without it,) you can get some of these things in 2 days!

Here’s a short list of ideas– (Many of these items have amazon links, but please– check your local Target or Wal-mart or even Dollar store, many of these items can be purchased there for less if you only need one or two of an item.)

For Everyone:

  • SOMETHING to cuddle. Teddy-bear, Small doll or other stuffed toy– every child needs to pull something cuddly out! We always try to pack this towards the top so the friendly face greets them first.
  • Hard Candy, Double Bagged
  • Small 8oz. Plastic Cups (these are small enough to pack in your boxes, but still big enough. Target also sells something similar for 1.00 a piece.)
  • Small Plastic Bowls (Many children do not even have their own bowl / cup for their daily meal.)
  • Individual packages of Tissues
  • Crayons
  • Colored Pencils, Pencil Sharpener
  • Stickers
  • Safety Scissors
  • Glue Sticks
  • Small zippered pencil pouch for above supplies
  • Small Notebooks for doodling, coloring
  • Coloring books
  • Bar of Soap and Plastic Soap Dish
  • Colored Band-Aids
  • Toothbrush with Case
  • Small Washcloth
  • Small clothing item (Last year we bought one of those dry-fit Champion T-Shirts from Target for our boy– and a small cotton dress or t-shirt for our girl, both folded up very small, and we tried to choose a size that would err on the side of being too big and not too small– this can be tricky since you choose an age range for your child– but I think it is worth it!)
  • Small colorful Books. All through the year we collect small, flat books to add to the bottom of our box. (Chick-Fil-a often gives these away in Kid’s Meals so we set them aside right away, unopened and then have several to choose from.)
  • Molded Plastic Animal Toy (Target also has a great selection of these, they are life-like and substantial.)
  • Small Light-up Spike Bouncy Ball (These are so fun!)
  • Socks

For Girls: (especially 10-14 range)

  • Hair Rubber bands on a small carabiner or holder
  • Small Hairbrush (this one is pocket-sized!)
  • Mini- sewing kit for girl age 10-14, this could be something that would benefit their entire family.
  • Lip-Balm
  • Head Bands, Hair bows, Hair Clips.
  • Small Lego Set
  • Cozy, Fuzzy Socks or Sock-type slippers with gripper-bottoms

For Boys: (especially 10-14 range)

  • LED Flashlight with extra batteries– This is HUGE for families without electricity.
  • OR, consider this HAND-CRANK flashlight. Solar powered and would really be a gift for the entire family.
  • Deflated Soccer Ball with Pump (I keep hearing that THIS right here is about ALL any little boy wants. 🙂 )
  • Small Plastic Comb
  • Small Tape Measure
  • Compass
  • Paracord Bracelet
  • Small Lego Sets

I am certain that this is a partial, non-exhaustive list– there are SO many wonderful things to add to an Operation Christmas Child Box. Feel free to mention things in the comments that you like to add to your box. I’d love to hear your ideas as well.

If the view from where you stand looks rather bleak and not at all how you hoped, can I remind you to look up?

These trees in my own backyard, captured this morning, last March, and last August, will continue changing in their own rhythmic way whether I’m watching them or not. There’s a comfort in that for me today— and perhaps for you.

Whatever looks slow and unmoving, with change almost too gradual to detect— is still very much in a pattern of forward transformation.

And these quiet days in the midst of our January-ness— we can be reminded that growth never really stops, especially in the hidden places.

This is the first complete weekend that we’ve been home since Thanksgiving. 😳 It sounds awful, especially for this homebody, but really what it means is, we’ve celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas with family, attended one beautiful family wedding (Hey, Shelby! 👋🏻❤️) one 90th Birthday party for our beloved Granny, and had a family trip. They were all such sparkly gifts. Ones I don’t take for granted and so very different from last year.

But I do love home— and am happy to spend the second half of the day right here with this book which I’m truly enjoying. 📚❤️

The filling we use is from @bonappetitmag and it’s really good. It’s a gorgeous blend of apples, dried fruits (cherries, apricots, sultanas, figs, currants) with apple cider, spices, and a few other things. No meat, though.

Happy Christmas from the Jolly Old Stuckeys! 🇬🇧🎄❤️
