Ice, Ice, Baby

February 17, 2014 by HappyGoStuckey 1 Comment

Well. It has been exactly SIX days since my last post. That is a long time, even for me.IMG_3728

BUT, for most of that time– we had no power. Zilch. Nada. Even days into the little event, I still found myself walking into rooms and involuntarily flipping light switches. They didn’t come on, of course.

In the hours that preceded good ole’ Winter Storm Pax.. we heard words like… “Catastrophic.” “Historical.” “Unprecedented.” “Dangerous.”

I mean, really. Who wouldn’t be a little concerned? But as I grew up in Jacksonville… where we hardly ever GOT the hurricanes which “were heading straight for us at an alarming speed–” I did not believe them. In fact, I was in complete denial and so expected to be disillusioned by our weather personnel, that it wasn’t until the night before at 9:00PM that I freaked out a little and asked Lance to go get some bread.

And boy am I glad he did. Because we (and mostly ALL of our town) lost complete and total power for at least a few days. Ours was out for 3 1/2 days. At first it was fun (because we expected it to come right back in a few hours– certainly in 24 hours… I see now that we were amateurs.) We camped out in front of the fireplace and my sweet husband built us a little “wood-fired grill” in our fireplace and we roasted hotdogs and cooked baked potatoes. We ate by candlelight and it was all very fun. Then we dragged mattresses in and every SINGLE blanket that we owned (because the temperature inside the house was falling rapidly) and bundled up, and had a slumber party. It was a few days of no heat, no lights, no TV, no internet, nothing but each other. It was simple and sweet and nice… and cold. Because here’s the thing about no heat and kids– They don’t get it. They won’t sit still under a blanket with you– they won’t even keep their socks on most of the time. We’re chasing them around putting layers on them, and they’re ransacking the house like every other day, all the while peeling their layers off. So funny.

The next day, the ice began to melt. And that was really a neat experience. The ice had been so heavy on trees and branches that many of them fell or broke during the night. But once the sun really came out brightly, it was as if the houses and trees just shook themselves and the snow and ice began to fall off in huge amounts. It felt as though they were all.. alive in a Narnia kind of way. Kind of like a cat stretching in the sun. Lance was outside grilling for lunch and he had to sit in the back of his truck so he wouldn’t get pounds and pounds of ice falling on his head. Later that day, we realized the roads were safe and it might be a few days before we had power so we packed up and escaped to family living a couple hours away. THAT was nice. Warm shower, warm beds, warm food, and warm hugs from family we always miss. It was a real treat.

So here’s what I learned. (Not that I am an expert. I think we’ve established that already by my disbelief in the news reports.)

  • I’m not sure why people buy bread and milk at a time like this. Bread and peanut butter, yes. But when you lose power, you also lose the ability to keep milk cold. We actually did put our milk outside to keep it cold in the ice. Speaking of, grab some bags of ice and coolers and you can keep your food for a couple days like that. I wish we would have done that.. but again—> skeptic.
  • Fireplaces are SO amazing. And plenty of Firewood. And charcoal if you have a grill. If you don’t use your fireplace often, get it inspected every few years and make sure you know how to operate it.
  • Keep your Freezer closed. When the power goes out, you actually have a couple days on stuff in the freezer– just don’t open it too much.
  • Charge your phones and keep them fully charged for as long as possible. Ours were charged but we still ended up charging them in our cars– which was kinda nice. I was the sacrificial soul who volunteered to sit out there with our phones, the nice HEATER and a copy of The Antelope in the Living Room: The Real Story of Two People Sharing One Life— which let me just say.. HILARIOUS. I knew it would be, but reading it there in my car with the rare joy of warm hands and a handful of peanut butter M&M’s that I smuggled outside in jacket pocket– bliss, I tell ya. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, I highly suggest you do. Whether or not you’ve been married a long time, this book will remind you just how funny we all are in marriage.
  • For the Love, consider buying a generator. Yes, you might never need it, but you just MIGHT. It’s funny, not three days prior, I actually “Pinned” something on Pinterest about disaster preparedness. Did I read it? No. Did I do what it suggested? No. Pinning does not equal doing. One can tell that by the amount of crafts I have pinned and the amount of crafts I have ACTUALLY done. Not equal, my friends, not at all.
  • Lastly, try hard NOT to be too frustrated. For two reasons, 1.) it does NOT help. Power will get restored when at all possible, and in our case, Georgia Power (and surrounding visiting companies) were working LONG hours, with little to no sleep, in extreme temperatures to repair a CITY full of damage. I think 3 1/2 days is pretty reasonable. But then, while I say that– I am currently, warm. And last week, I was.. well, not. 2.) Your attitude rubs off on everyone around you. After the first 15 hours, I was getting rather ornery. And impatient. And frustrated. And cold. And at one point, I noticed– the kids were just fine. Sure, they had little red noses and cold hands– but they were SO enjoying us all being together– it was like a huge party for them.

P.S. I’m hoping that the News Network’s usage of the word, “Historical” means we won’t EVER see this again– and 30 years from now, Lance and I will say– “Hey, remember that time we lost power for almost 4 days and we lived like Pioneers?” Not as in, the Pioneer Woman, of course– because that would just be cool. More like, Ma & Pa Ingalls. Charles and Caroline- to be exact. And I’ll say, “Yes, tis but a distant memory. A memory filled with snuggling our little kiddos (who will by this time, likely have kids of their own.) and the faint sounds of chainsaws breaking through fallen trees in the distance.” Ahhh. Yes, historical. That’s my hope.

Really though, we are SO thankful for God’s protection and amazing provision during last week.

A Birthday Girl & the Aristocats

February 7, 2014 by HappyGoStuckey 1 Comment

Well, the floors are FINALLY finished! Woohoo! And I promise to post some great pictures next week–

But all that’s taking a back seat for now because Abigail is turning TWO on Sunday and we are celebrating her this weekend!

She loves cats and dogs, and she really loves the Aristocats Movie. She calls it, “Erybody” from the song, “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat.”

So this movie came out ages ago but it was recently re-released and we own it and a stuffed Marie… but other than that– Aristocats theming is pretty much.. non-existent. So I’ve been trying to use my creative juices to get this party to come together— and since the floors got finished about, OH– say 15 minutes ago… the house is finally quiet. And ahh… did you hear that? Quiet.

So I’m off to try to put this party on and clean up days of collateral damage from the painting job followed by the flooring job. It’s basically a zoo around here… but at least the carpet that looked like it lined an elephant’s cage is gone. WOOHOO!!!

I’ll be back next week with all manner of Puurrrrfect Party Pictures. (Yes, I did. I love a good pun.)

In the mean time– here’s a few snapshots from Abby’s first days.

I couldn’t help myself. She did this a lot for her first… well a long time. She’s smiles all the time now.

The Antelope in the Living Room– Available Today!

February 4, 2014 by HappyGoStuckey Leave a Comment

The other day my friend Amy and I went out to dinner and then to LifeWay… (Yes, we were a couple of crazy moms out on the town on a Friday night.)

And soon after we walked in, I hear her exclaim, “What??!?! I din’t know this was out yet!!!!” Which made me come quickly to where she was– because, well she’s kinda not someone who just goes around exclaiming all the time. Except that one time she pulled me out of the path of a crazy driver at 6:15AM in your sidewalk-less neighborhood…

Anyway, this is what we found!!! (And four days early!!)

Exciting!
Exciting! Too bad I covered up the M in Melanie– Clearly, I need more practice with this.

So Amy bought a copy but I restrained–  but only because Lance bought me one on pre-order for Christmas. Needless to say, I might chase the mailman down the street if he doesn’t bring it today. Maybe. He will for sure get a look of disapproval.

So for those of you who may not know, Melanie Shankle author of the Big Mama Blog, wrote this book and also Sparkly Green Earrings– which I talk about frequently. It’s my favorite book to give a new mom. I’m sure this will be another favorite book to give also.

If you need more convincing– here’s the cute video promo–

&nbsp[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJPdu1r3jlY]

YAY! I cannot wait. She’s just such a fun & relatable writer. You know that friend that you love to have coffee with because they can be telling you a hilarious story about their kid one moment and have you challenged at your walk with Christ the next? That’s Melanie Shankle’s writing. I encourage you to run right out and buy the book– You can buy it just about anywhere but here’s the link on Amazon: The Antelope in the Living Room: The Real Story of Two People Sharing One Life  (affiliate link–thanks for clicking!)

Trim Paint-a-thon 2014

January 27, 2014 by HappyGoStuckey Leave a Comment

Yep.. it’s still going on. We’re NOT finished yet– but we’re close! To be fair, the trim was pretty quick– (well quick when you consider sanding, 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of pain!) but the doors, etc. are taking a while. But we are pressing on valiantly– and I hope to have some before and after photos for you soon– and for me. I can’t wait to be finished with the trim so we can paint the walls!

But as I currently have 18 boxes of oak flooring sitting next to me, the pressure is already on. 🙂

Thank you to all of you who offered humor, encouragement and helpful advice during our decision making process.

Once it’s over, we are all planning to do a victory dance.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is Abby’s Victory Dance.  Sometimes we all race around the house, or up the stairs (its a good way to get them moving towards their beds at night!) and I started doing a little victory dance.. and then Abby made her own up. Cute.

You’re Welcome.

I love how she gets down and winds her little body up! Hilarious!

Happy Monday!

This too, has passed.

December 16, 2013 by HappyGoStuckey Leave a Comment

So let’s see.. quick recap.

One week ago today I was in the ER with my first ever Kidney Stone. (WHAT???!!?!) Yeah. I woke up with horrible knife like pain in my back and could not sit, stand or function. My dear friend, neighbor and walking partner lovingly took me to the ER before the sun came up and sat by me and watched me writhe for 2 1/2 hrs. until I received pain meds. She sat by my bedside and took care of me in the sweet ministry that is Emesis bags and wet paper towels. Jen Hatmaker said at DotMom this year that “she has learned that just about every problem her kids have– can be cured with either a wet paper towel or a glass of water.”  I’m convinced that’s true. No joke, there was service in those wet paper towels. There is seriously something so comforting about having a friend that doesn’t mind taking you to the hospital. ( Thanks, Amy! I promise to do the same for you should the need ever arise. ) She also helped watch my babies that afternoon until Lance took over and sent them home with a new Veggietales Movie.

By the time I got home from the hospital my mom had made the 5 hr. drive from Florida, (I’m pretty sure she just wanted to see my Christmas Decorations and catch up on Downton Abbey re-runs before the new season begins. Which we did–once the meds kicked in!) Also, each of our dinner meals that week had been taken care of by members of our small group. Another friend picked Lucy up from school and took care of her and the list just goes on of people that took care of us!! Such love!

Unfortunately, the same can NOT be said of all the emergency personnel we came in contact with. There should be a law against making “jokes” when your patient is doubled over groaning in pain and you KNOW you have absolutely no intention of helping her for at least another 2 hours. The meds did eventually come and life was sweet…

Until the official diagnosis came by way of the Dr with about a ‘2’ on the bedside manner scale.

Dr. What’shisname: “So you have a kidney stone.”

Me: “ok.”

Dr. What’shisname: “You know a lot of soda can cause them… do you drink a lot of soda?”

Me: “No, not really at all.”

Dr. What’shisname: “Oh well, do you eat a lot of greeny leafy vegetables?”

Me: “YES!” (hopeful, just knowing I’m about to pass this test!)

Dr. What’shisname: “Yeah, that can do it too.”

*Crickets*

So apparently I am supposed to avoid soda and green leafy vegetables. It figures. I knew all those salads and green smoothies were going to catch up with me someday. Here I was, just frittering away all my servings of vegetables and making sure I got enough vitamins like there was no tomorrow. Just eating green vegetables willy nilly– and never thinking about the consequences. Blast you, food pyramid.

So my ever gracious and compassionate Mom arrives. I don’t care who you are, you always need your mommy when you’re sick. If there’s one thing my mom is, it’s sympathetic. Which is nice, seeing as she spent all those years in the medical field– you’d expect she would have that “I’ve seen it all– get over it-you’re just fine” attitude. But not her. All I have to do is tell her I have a headache and she’s acts as though I’ve just had to remove my own appendix. It’s kinda nice. Like I said, you always need medical sympathy from your mom.

Within a day or two (or three?) I was feeling much better and things seemed to have.. you know– cleared up (out?) but I made the mistake of never making the official announcement that I had indeed passed the kidney stone.

I know this because the night before last, Lance and I had the following enlightening chat.

Him: “So how are you doing?”

Me: “Oh, I’m ok. much better now that I don’t think we’re going to catch the flu the kids have.” (Yes, the FLU!! what a week!!)

Him: “So… do you think you’ll pass the stone soon?”

Me: “WHAT??!?!?! Babe, that happened days ago.”

Him: “Really? Because people at work keep asking me if you passed it and I keep telling them no.”

So now I’m just a little embarrassed that everyone thinks I’ve just been walking around, hanging on to kidney stones for an inordinate amount of time.

Well, you know– hanging on to kidney stones and munching on way too much spinach and all.

I’m such a rebel. I might as well get a Harley.

Monday & A TREAT from English Tea Paperie!!!

December 2, 2013 by HappyGoStuckey Leave a Comment

Hello there. Remember me? The girl who blogged three plus times a week? I promise I’m still here. Last week, I had no intentions of taking an entire week off for Thanksgiving, but I had a few technical issues and so, I did.

And it was quite refreshing. There was a lot of sitting, drinking coffee, seeing dear friends, eating (and eating again) and all manner of Fall fun. I was even able to spend a few hours on black friday JUST my mom and me! We had lunch at a favorite place and walked around the Town Center, casually shopping– while people around us made mad dashes for whatever they were in search of. It was pure bliss!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving and though I plan to share some thoughts and photos from the week, I wanted to make just a few quick unrelated comments real quick!

Wednesday Shopportunity: For the Book Lover

November 13, 2013 by HappyGoStuckey Leave a Comment

_MG_6291

So it’s no secret that we are a family of book-lovers. We LOVE to read right down to the youngest one of us. If I could, I would have an inexhaustible book budget so that when I read something I enjoy, I could quick buy it for everyone else I know would enjoy it too. But since an inexhaustible anything budget is pretty much a pipe dream, I get so excited when I can buy books for others. It is possible I enjoy giving them more than they enjoy receiving them… Hmm.

But, as we have a major giving opportunity just about six weeks away, I wanted to share my favorite books to give these days. Several are on my Winter Must Read List– hopefully I’ll make a little progress soon.

Ok–One of my favorite books to give your mom, aunt, or best friend who also happens to be a mom– Sparkly Green Earrings: Catching the Light at Every Turn I have mentioned this one before, and Melanie, aka Big Mama happens to be one of my very favorite bloggers. She writes with true wit and heart, and you will feel as though you’re chatting about the humor and horrors of motherhood at a tiny table at Starbucks instead of reading alone.

IMG_0328

AND, Melanie is releasing her second book(a memoir on marriage) on February 4, 2014 and I can only imagine that it will be a total delight, The Antelope in the Living Room: The Real Story of Two People Sharing One Life –So yay!

While we’re on the subject of books to buy your family members– this book by Sophie Hudson is a safe bet for any human being that has even an ounce of Southern in their blood– even if it’s in spirit only. A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet: Southern Stories of Faith, Family, and Fifteen Pounds of Bacon is a light and easy read which will have you reflecting on all the crazy and wonderful idiosyncrasies of your own extended family. Buy it for your grandma, your aunt– whoever!

Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes by Shauna Niequist has been at the top of my “to read” pile and as soon as I finish my current book, I will dive right in. I keep hearing wonderful things about it and though I love a good piece of authentic food writing, this seems to be so much more. The little bit that I’ve paged through has made me want to grab a cozy blanket, a cup of something warm and settle in to read every word in one sitting.

_MG_6303

Now, I know we’re talking about gifts to buy others– but just for a minute, let’s talk about a gift I want you to buy for yourself. Ann Voskamp has just released the most beautiful piece of Advent Writing I’ve ever seen. The Greatest Gift: Unwrapping the Full Love Story of Christmas contains 25 readings for the first 25 days of December and you will want to relish each one. I had the sincere honor of hearing her in person last month and it was a wonderful experience. She is an amazing writer. An amazing speaker. An amazing mother who has crossed the globe touching others, whether in person or in print. More importantly, she is a woman who is SHINING for Jesus in all that she puts her hands to. So, please, go buy yourself this book! And I dare you to try to wait until December 1st to crack it’s cover; but if you do– we will be reading it together. I’ll bring the coffee.

_MG_6306

A Million Little Ways, A: Uncover the Art You Were Made to Live by Emily P. Freeman is my current read. It’s absolutely beautiful. I’m reading it with a highlighter that is quickly growing dry and God is ministering to my soul through this book. Whatever your calling in life, whatever your passion… this book *might* just set you free to live fully in the joy and grace that Christ has given us. Whew!

God is Able by Priscilla Shirer is a relatively short but rich book reminding us of God’s power and provision. My mom bought this for me about a month ago, and it is good. Very good in fact, that I would recommend it to anyone in a situation that seems “too big.”

IMG_2226

THIS is the lovely Ree’s new holiday cookbook, and it is HUGE. Well worth the price and what a beauty it is! The Pioneer Woman Cooks: A Year of Holidays: 140 Step-by-Step Recipes for Simple, Scrumptious Celebrations. I do not own this yet– but every time I go to Costco for spinach or greek yogurt… I find myself wandering past the book table just to flip its’ gorgeous glossy pages.

reecookbook

And last, but not least–Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption!! This book is available on Amazon but is unable to be linked to. I was given it recently and hope to start it in a few months. I know many of you have probably read it, but you know me– always late to the party!

Happy Reading and Happy Gifting!!!

There’s something unusually long about the winter There’s something unusually long about the winter months when we’re in a season of slow growth and imperceptible change.

The landscape outside your window TODAY can feel like it’s your landscape forever but it’s actually not.

If the view from where you stand looks rather bleak and not at all how you hoped, can I remind you to look up?

These trees in my own backyard, captured this morning, last March, and last August, will continue changing in their own rhythmic way whether I’m watching them or not. There’s a comfort in that for me today— and perhaps for you.

Whatever looks slow and unmoving, with change almost too gradual to detect— is still very much in a pattern of forward transformation.

And these quiet days in the midst of our January-ness— we can be reminded that growth never really stops, especially in the hidden places.

This is the first complete weekend that we’ve been home since Thanksgiving. 😳 It sounds awful, especially for this homebody, but really what it means is, we’ve celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas with family, attended one beautiful family wedding (Hey, Shelby! 👋🏻❤️) one 90th Birthday party for our beloved Granny, and had a family trip. They were all such sparkly gifts. Ones I don’t take for granted and so very different from last year.

But I do love home— and am happy to spend the second half of the day right here with this book which I’m truly enjoying. 📚❤️

The filling we use is from @bonappetitmag and it’s really good. It’s a gorgeous blend of apples, dried fruits (cherries, apricots, sultanas, figs, currants) with apple cider, spices, and a few other things. No meat, though.
